To start Studio 3, we were thrown into the idea of having a client in ways we had never experienced. While in previous studios it was touched on, this studio created specific requirements of neighborhood context, specialized needs, and historical references that influence the form and program of these projects.
This first project, a performing arts center in Mission Hill Boston, challenged me to look into a neighborhood for my inspiration. Ultimately, I found my inspiration through the historical use of puddingstone in the building of homes throughout Mission Hill. This connection became the focus of my project.
Perspectives are hand drawn, and drawings and renders are through Rhino and Adobe Suite.
After using what I learned in the first project, I knew that I had a passion for finding ties back to the community. I used what I learned in the first project, both good and bad, to inform how and what to look for when looking for community and historical context. The result was this boat-building school. This school keeps in mind the experience of its inhabitants as well as the historical context of saltbox homes to create this design. The form came from playing with addition and subtraction of a simple form.
